Things I Never Knew Existed, Afterlife Edition

Posted by: Jeff Kupperman Sun, 12 Oct 2008 19:41:20 GMT

I had a "wow, I never would have thought of that" moment at the Community Systems Foundation meeting yesterday when one of the attendees brought up his business in "green burials."  The idea is if you're trying to minimize your final impact on the earth, instead of cremation, you choose a cemetery with a mission of preserving open, natural space.  The argument is that -- in the U.S. these days at least -- no one is going to buy a cemetery and put a shopping mall on the land.  Of course, looking historically and globally, this hasn't exactly been true... Interesting idea, though.

Only law-abiding citizens follow laws, so why bother?

Posted by: Jeff Kupperman Tue, 09 Sep 2008 13:31:36 GMT

"When you outlaw guns in a certain area, the only people who follow that are law-abiding citizens, and everybody else ignores it," said the superintendent of schools in Harrold, Texas, where school employees are now allowed to carry concealed weapons.  (Education Week, Sept. 3)

We had a small incident in the parking lot of the John Knox Center before we left.

Cornelia, you should be more careful about who you lend your scooter to!
